Historical Background: The Dutch NSB (1931–1945)
The National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands (NSB) was founded in Utrecht on 14 December 1931 by Anton Mussert. Influenced by Italian Fascism and German Nazism, the movement opposed parliamentary democracy and promoted authoritarian rule. During the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, the NSB openly collaborated with the Nazi occupiers and supported their rule. The movement became increasingly antisemitic and played a role in the occupation’s oppressive political system. Following the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945, the NSB was banned and its leadership faced prosecution.
