Historical Background: The Dutch SS (1940–1945)
The Dutch SS (Nederlandsche SS) was established in September 1940 during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Closely associated with the National Socialist Movement (NSB), it promoted Nazi ideology and sought to integrate the Netherlands into a Greater Germanic Empire. In November 1942, the organization was renamed the Germaansche SS in Nederland. Thousands of Dutch men also volunteered for the German Waffen-SS and fought alongside German forces, particularly on the Eastern Front. The Dutch SS was part of the collaborationist system that supported Nazi occupation and persecution.
